Enjoy Coffee: a new space for coffee, culture and live sessions

The Enjoy group has shared more detail on Enjoy Coffee, the fifth brand in the family and the first to give the group a physical home that anyone can walk into. It is designed as a specialty coffee shop and a live-content venue, with a broadcast corner at its centre from which Enjoy Radio will go out live.
The idea grew from the way the group's audience already behaves. Listeners, ticket buyers and fans of the artists on tour are a community, but until now they have had few places to meet outside a show. Enjoy Coffee is intended to be one of them: familiar, welcoming and open to the neighbourhood. The design brief asks for a room that welcomes regulars as warmly as first-time visitors, and that sounds as good as it looks.

Two lives in one room

By day the space will be calm and bright, serving specialty coffee and pastries to people who want to work, meet a friend or simply stop for a while. The coffee will be taken as seriously as everything else the group does, and the room will be designed to be comfortable for long afternoons. Details such as lighting, seating and sound will be chosen with both halves of the day in mind.
In the evening the lights come down and the radio floor wakes up. Enjoy Radio will broadcast from the room, with DJ sets, artist interviews and filmed sessions in front of a small audience and many more listeners online. Artists in town for a show will be able to stop by for a conversation before they go on stage.

The radio floor: DJs mixing live on air

The broadcast corner is not a studio hidden behind glass at the back. It sits in the room, a few steps from the tables, so that the people drinking coffee are the first audience for everything that goes out on air. On set evenings the station's resident DJs will mix live from the decks, and the mix the room hears is the mix the listeners hear, at the same moment, on the web and in the Enjoy Radio app. Guest DJs, visiting selectors and the DJs who play the group's club nights will take over for their own shows, and some of those shows will be filmed, so a set played to forty people in the room reaches thousands afterwards.
Listeners who have only ever heard a voice will be able to walk in and see the show being made. Presenters will host their programmes from the floor on chosen days, read the messages that reach the studio from the tables as well as from phones across Europe, and the team is planning open-deck evenings, where DJs from the community can play a short set on air for the first time.

What Enjoy Radio brings into the room

The station arrives with habits its listeners already know. Everything it does on air today will carry on from the coffee shop, with the difference that the audience can now see it happen.
  • Live DJs: residents and guests on the decks, from the floor at Enjoy Coffee and from their own studios around Europe, with Auto DJ filling the hours in between
  • A WhatsApp line to the studio: song requests and dedications, the dedicatii the station's listeners know and love, sent to the DJ while the show is on and read out between the tracks
  • Listen and win: short codes read on air, typed into the website or the app within minutes, entered into a draw nobody can rig, with tickets, memberships and more as prizes
  • Messages from the studio: a push to listeners' phones when a DJ goes live or has something to say
  • The Enjoy Radio app on iPhone and Android: the live stream with the title of the track playing, one tap in the car with CarPlay, and a stream that rides out a dropped signal
  • Interviews and the artist session series: conversations and short performances recorded for air and kept online afterwards
  • Idents by the artists themselves: performers record their own jingles for the station, and the station plays them between the songs
  • Show previews and giveaways for the group's events and for partner shows, from the first announcement to the night itself

Artists at the table

The room is built to invite artists in. Performers touring with Enjoy Events will be asked to call in on the day of their show for a session: a conversation with a presenter, a few songs played close and quiet, recorded and filmed for the station's artist session series and kept online once the night is over. First-listen evenings will give an artist a room full of people for a new release, with the station carrying the premiere live. Where a session has seats to offer, they will go through Enjoy Tickets, and the group's members will hear first.
Sessions will not stop at the artists on tour. Singers, bands, comedians, producers and writers passing through the city will be welcome, as will the people behind the scenes who rarely get a microphone. The only rule is the one the station already follows: give people the time and the room to have a proper conversation.

We wanted somewhere you could come for a good coffee in the morning and stay for a live session in the evening, without it ever feeling like two different places.

A week at Enjoy Coffee

  • Mornings: specialty coffee, pastries and a quiet room to work or meet
  • Afternoons: interviews and sessions recorded for Enjoy Radio, with the tables still open
  • Evenings: the decks go live, with requests and dedications coming in by WhatsApp
  • Show days: artists in town for an Enjoy Events night drop in before they go on stage
  • Weekends: listening parties, first-listen evenings and filmed sessions
  • Late: the after-show conversation, on air, with the people who were there

A venue, an audience and content from one evening

Enjoy Coffee will also be available for launches, listening parties and community events, offering partners a venue, an audience and content from a single evening. The room is being designed so that filming and broadcasting fit naturally into the space, without interrupting the people sitting in it. A brand can host a night that is heard on the station, filmed for the group's channels and attended by the community, all from one room.

A radio station usually asks you to imagine the room. We would rather you could come and sit in it.
